Soucie: Bears camp lacks controversy
Chicago Bears camp usually provides a fair amount controversies to discuss ad nauseum. You can always count on a good contract squabble in training camp can't you? Apparently not this year as the Bears signed cornerbacks Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman to long-term deals and resolved a potentially nasty contract situation with linebacker Lance Briggs. What about those rookies holding out? You can always count on the youngsters trying to squeeze out a few more bucks from their new bosses. OK, you've got to be kidding me. All of the rookies are signed! Where's Drew Rosenhaus when you need him? A Rosenhaus-inspired holdout is always makes good copy. Then I remembered that Rosenhaus represented Bears top choice Greg Olsen, who signed over a month ago. What is this world coming to? I'm starting to get desperate here. Now to the fallback plan. Position battles. The gold standard of training camp stories. When there is nothing else to talk about, you can always count on a good training camp duel to provide some intrigue. But a quick look at the depth chart shows absolutely nothing, almost everyone is back. Nothing to debate. And there's only so much discussion one can undertake about the potential three-headed rotation at the second defensive tackle position. And after the whole Briggs situation blows over, probably by the weekend when he officially shows up in camp, opportunities for turmoil will be virtually nil. "That's the way camp is supposed to start, where you are talking about football," Bears head coach Lovie Smith said. "Guys getting better, all of your players getting better. This is different. It seems like every year I've been here I've been talking about things not related to guys on the football field. This is new. And I like it a lot." I don't.
