Tillman says Bears will learn from Super Bowl loss By Jimmy Street sports@daily-journal.com Charles "Peanut" Tillman's philosophy on the Chicago Bears' loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI is simple, but it's accurate, too. "The error of the past is the wisdom of the future," said Tillman. The Bears' 29-17 loss to the Colts in Miami isn't something that Tillman is having an easy time forgetting, but while he remembers what it felt like to lose the game, the lessons he learned from the defeat are yielding a hard work ethic on the practice field. "Don't hold anything back," said Tillman. "You have to give it your all at all times. You have to go into every game thinking that it might be your last." In practice, Tillman consistently battles the receiving core at full-speed, not only to make himself better, but also in hopes of making his teammates better players when game day rolls around. "I was taught to go one speed, and that's full-speed," Tillman said. "When I'm out there practicing, I'm trying to get better. I'm trying to get them better. If I give them a good look, on the flip-side they'll give me a good look so I can be ready for Sunday and the teams that I go up against." During Tuesday's practice, things got a bit edgy between Tillman and Devin Hester, but both players were quick to downplay the situation when it came up on Wednesday. "That's just football," said Hester. "It's going to get physical from time to time. We're trying to better each other, get prepared and get ready for the season. We're teammates. We're brothers and we're going to play on the same team, so we're going to see each other every day." Hester was one of six players to miss practice on Wednesday, joining Olin Kreutz, Mark Bradley, Brian Urlacher, Tyler Everett and Tommie Harris on the sidelines. None of the players' injuries are considered serious. *** With just three days of camp remaining, head coach Lovie Smith is looking forward to going up against the Colts in a rematch of last year's Super Bowl on Monday, even if it is just a preseason game. "Whenever you get a chance to play against the World Champions, it's big," said Smith. "Of course we have a history with them, but as much as anything, it's another chance for us to see exactly where we are with our evaluation of our football team." The preparation for the second preseason game will be similar to the first, but Smith is looking forward to giving his starters more playing time. "We'll just play our guys more," Smith said. "The plan is to play the guys at least a couple of quarters and go from there. We should get a chance to get in a little better game shape." *** Trumaine McBride has been getting solid reviews from the coaching staff throughout camp, and the rookie cornerback made a nice read to intercept a Brian Griese pass during a 7-on-7 drill Wednesday. After nursing a sore knee during the first two practice sessions of the week, Kyle Orton was back on the field during Wednesday's workout, and rookie Greg Fassitt was quick to welcome him back into action. Orton tried launching a deep pass, but over-shot his intended receiver, when Fassitt accelerated and then fully extended to make an eye-popping, diving interception. Rex Grossman had better luck, as the chemistry between he and Bernard Berrian looked to be in mid-season form, as the two hooked up on several occasions. The most entertaining connection between the duo came when Berrian got by Tillman to catch a deep pass along the right sideline during 7-on-7 drills. *** Aaron Brant, a rookie out of Iowa State, was waived/injured on Wednesday and the Bears signed Steven Vieira, a second-year player from UCLA, to fill the tackle's vacancy. Vieira spent time in the Cincinnati Bengals organization during the 2006 season. |
