While the Chicago Bears are nearing the end of their eighth year of training camp at Olivet Nazarene University, one wide receiver in his first professional season is making a push for playing time.

Juaquin Iglesias, a third-round draft pick from the University of Oklahoma, is looking to make enough plays to force the Bears to put him on the field.

Iglesias

He made a splash in his first professional game on Saturday against Buffalo, catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Brett Basanez in the fourth quarter.

“A lot of dreams came true,” Iglesias said, “especially getting my first catch and my first touchdown. I know it’s just a preseason game, but still, as a little kid, you just dream of putting that uniform on and being out there and competing. That’s what I’ve been looking forward to all my life.”

The touchdown catch is a nice way to begin his career, but he knows there’s still work to do before he can be an impact receiver for quarterback Jay Cutler and the Bears’ offense, like he was in Oklahoma. He led the Sooners in receptions in 2007 and 2008 with 68 and 74, respectively.

“The main thing I need to focus on is learning the offense, getting familiar with the offense as best as I can,” Iglesias said. “The better I understand the offense, the more plays I could probably make in there.”

He will have to make an adjustment to the speed of the professional game, but head coach Lovie Smith believes it will be a minor one coming from a Division I program like Oklahoma.

“I think there’s a difference (coming to the NFL),” Smith said. “But some of the major programs like Oklahoma, Florida, the perennial top teams, they have speed guys, too. Probably one through 53, there’s a difference, but he’s played against speed guys.”

Iglesias echoed the same sentiments.

“I feel like they were flying around at Oklahoma, too,” Iglesias said. “Here you have to understand a lot more and think about a lot more.”

It appears Devin Hester will go into the season as the Bears’ No. 1 receiver while Earl Bennett will likely be the second wideout, but Smith likes what he sees in Iglesias.

“He’s a rookie trying to earn his stripes right now,” Smith said. “It’s one preseason game and we have a long ways to go, but we like what he’s done so far.”

The Daily Journal/Nicholas Holstein" width="300" height="452" />
Bobby Delmore, an Illinois State University senior, is an intern with the Chicago bears' athletic training staff this camp. The Daily Journal/Nicholas Holstein

Some of the biggest news coming out of this year’s Chicago Bears Training Camp has been on the injury front.

Cornerback Charles Tillman had back surgery, cornerback Zack Bowman suffered a hamstring injury and defensive tackle Tommie Harris has sat out much of practice because of knee and hamstring issues.

And as the Bears try to keep their players on the field, a Bourbonnais native is lending a hand.

Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School alumnus Bobby Delmore is working with the Bears on an athletic training internship. Delmore, heading into his senior year at Illinois State University, helps the Bears’ athletic training staff prevent and treat injuries.

Delmore first heard about the possibility of interning with the Bears a few years ago when his parents met Tim Bream, the Bears’ head athletic trainer, at a dinner.

“I had mentioned to him that my son is an athletic training major,” said Joe Delmore, Bobby’s father. “And (Bream) asked where Bobby went to school at. When I said he went to Illinois State, (Bream) said, ‘We usually take someone from there (as a summer intern). They’ve got a good program.’”

Joe Delmore said Bream told him to have his son apply once he became a junior.

After sending in his resume and doing an interview, Bobby Delmore landed a job with the team this summer, giving him a taste of professional athletics.

“I knew it would be good just being in the environment of professional sports,” he said, “seeing how things are run, and how that differs from in high school and college. It’s definitely exceeded my expectations.”

Although the Bears may practice for only a few hours each day, Delmore’s responsibilities extend beyond time on the field.

“It’s really an all-day thing,” he said. “We go in the morning (before practice), and we’re out there during and after practice. Before practice, it’s mostly getting supplies ready and making sure all taping is done. Post-practice, we do some rehabilitation work and ice bags and stuff like that.”

During practice, the interns split into groups based on player positions and concentrate on keeping the players hydrated, Delmore said.

The amount of interaction Delmore has with the players varies daily, but overall, they have been “great” to work with.

Still, being able to work with and learn from the Bears’ training staff has been the best part, Delmore said.

“That’s probably the best thing — working as a team,” he said. “Just kind of the interaction with the full staff. It’s cool to compare and learn things from them. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.”

When the Chicago Bears report to Olivet Nazarene University one by one today, it’s a safe bet that the top question each of the players will be asked will pertain to the drama that unfolded on Wednesday.

In an interview with KFAN-AM, former Bears and current Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Bobby Wade alleged that the Bears were unhappy thus far with new quarterback Jay Cutler, adding that linebacker Brian Urlacher questioned the toughness of his new teammate.

“Pretty much, (Urlacher) said Jay Cutler was a (expletive),” Wade said on the radio show.
News of Wade’s comments soon hit Chicago sports-talk radio airwaves, with Urlacher offering a quick response, telling the Chicago Tribune, “(Wade)’s trying to get things going before training camp. That’s just Bobby being Bobby.”

Cutler has thus far not offered a comment on the situation.

Urlacher is traditionally one of the last players to report to camp and Cutler’s expected arrival time at ONU is unknown.
